Objectives
-
Gain proficiency in the procedures and maneuvers introduced in the previous flight lesson, especially preflight activities, ground operations, and attitude control during basic maneuvers using visual references (VR).
-
Learn the elements of crosswind taxiing, turns, and flying at various airspeeds.
-
Understand collision avoidance and runway incursion avoidance procedures.
Session Details
This session will re-iterate some of the basic operational activities from the previous lesson(s), such as preflight and runup. During all early lessons a focus on good ground operations will be emphasized, including adherence to taxiway centerlines, an awareness of wingtip locations (and how darn wide these machines really are), with a focus on avoiding collisions.
The collision avoidance emphasis continues in the air with discussions of how to correctly scan for traffic, how to look into turns before turning, and other best practices.
This flight will also explore steep turns and slow flight, with a discussion about how AoA changes with flap deployment. Consider a brief white-board session prior to flight to sketch out this concept.
Proceed from normal shallow/medium bank turns into steep turns. Show how moving to a 45 degree bank changes the amount of back pressure needed to maintain level flight, but that the basic concept of keeping the pitch angle with respect to the horizon doesn’t.
